The Voices We Hear

There are numerous voices that we encounter on a daily basis.  Our own intellect, peers, family members, social media, situations, pressure, and of course demon spirits are a few of the opposing voices we must combat, resist, and ignore.  Jesus described these as strange voices. John 10:5 Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.

If we are not careful we can be persuaded to choose a destructive path simply because we heard one of these voices instruct us to do a particular thing. Luke 8:18 Therefore take heed how you hear. For whoever has, to him more will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he seems to have will be taken from him.”

On the other hand, the guidance of The Holy Spirit is the one voice we must adhere to each day. Why? Because when He speaks he will guide us into all truth. John 16:13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

I have learned two essential fundamentals help me discern the difference between false and truthful voices. Essential number one is The Scripture. Essential number two is what God reveals through His prophet.  Following these two voices of God causes peace, productivity, and certainty.

When it comes to The Scripture we must remember that The Word of God is alive. Hebrews 4:12 says in part, For the word of God is living and powerful.  God’s Word will speak to us and guide us through the valleys and victories of life.

Likewise, God’s prophet is the voice God uses to cause us to prosper on our journey.  The latter part of 2 Chronicles 20:20 says, believe in the Lord your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper.

Where is God’s prophet? He is in the local church laboring in the Word, shepherding the flock, feeding God’s people with knowledge and understanding, and being an example of the believer.

So, even though we are bombarded with various voices we must be selective in who we heed. Remember to flee strange voices and holdfast to the direct and indirect guidance of God’s Spirit. The Holy Spirit will never go contrary to Scripture and He speaks through God’s prophet as well.
